Joel Grothaus /grōt•house/ was born in 1988 in the Detroit area, with an inherent love for observing beauty and the details of the natural world. Over time, creating art became the central means for making sense of these observations, which led him to pursue a BFA in illustration at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.
After graduating, Joel became studio technician at Signal-Return, a letterpress print studio in Detroit's Eastern Market where he has done illustration and print work for clients such as Shinola, American Express, and Facebook.
In this digital age of glowing screens and the relentless bombardment of media stimuli, painting offers Joel a tactile and personal means of interpreting the experience of living in the world.
Joel's painting studio is down the hall from Gunner Animation in the St. Vincent Building in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. He shares studio space with fellow artists Mike Burdick and James Noellert.
He is represented by David Klein Gallery
